Hidden Frost Death Knight artifact appearance source revealed

The Frost Death Knight Artifact hidden appearance has been the subject of speculation for quite some time. Having gone so long without it, or the path to obtaining it, being discovered the theory that made the most sense was that it was tied to a World Boss. Seeing as though we haven’t seen all of the World Bosses as yet, it made a lot of sense that the appearance was linked in some way to a boss we hadn’t seen. Today Blizzard have confirmed this to be the case in a blue post on the forums.

Many of you have also been asking about the hidden appearance for Frost Death Knights. We’ve been trying to avoid giving out too much in the way of spoilers for these, but as it’s now the last one to be discovered, we figured we might as well give you guys a hint. This appearance is tied to a particular world boss, which hasn’t spawned yet. Once that boss is available, we expect the appearance to be found pretty quickly.

The frost appearance is unlocked via Runes of the Darkening, which carries the flavour text:

“Written in an ancient language that no living soul remembers, yet somehow the words leap to your tongue, yearning to be read.”

Warcraft has a long history of referencing Norse mythology, of which the concept of Runes are linked to. In Legion Stormheim owes a great debt to Norse mythology. Even scanning through an overview of Norse mythology you’ll notice a number of familiar names and stories.

A lot of attention has been focused on the zone of Stormheim in the search for the frost artifact hidden appearance, largely due to the ‘Rune’ reference in the flavour text and apparent links to vrykul as well as a number or ‘Rune’ themed quests and NPCs that are found in Stormheim. The Death Knight link to Runes and Vrykul via the Val’kyr also meant that theories surrounding the Frost Hidden Appearance being found in Stormheim were highly plausible.

With that said, and the new information from Blizzard, I think we can narrow down the search for the Frost Death Knight hidden appearance to a world ‘boss’ that spawns in Stormheim we haven’t seen yet… which narrows is down to one possibility…

My best guess is that we’ll start seeing Frost Death Knights running around with the Dark Runeblades as soon as The Soultakers world boss spawns. The Soul Takers are actually three Vrykul, Captain Hring, Soultrapper Mevra and Reaver Jdorn. They spawn on the island of Shield’s Rest, which is a small island in the top right corner of the Stormheim map.

Interestingly, Captain Hring is quite possibly a reference to Sigurd Hring a legendary Viking King and father of Ragnar Lodbrok. Anyone that’s seen the TV show Vikings would be familiar with Ragnar Lodbrok, who is played by Travis Fimmel, who also starred in the Warcraft movie as Sir Anduin Lothar. Almost six degrees of separation.

So now we wait for the Soultakers to see where the search take us next.

Edit: Some further information that supports The Soultakers as the source of the hidden appearance. A user on the MMO Champion forum posted that when landing at the flight path in Valdisdall, Stormheim with bugged versions of the hidden frost appearance an NPC commented on them. Having a quick scan of WoWhead, the NPC is Garhal the Scalekeeper. A couple of his other quotes relate to other classes artifacts. Apparently when a Death Knight with the bugged appearance lands he comments:

Garhal the Scalekeeper says: It is good to see those blades out of kvaldir hands.

Edit: (23-11-2016) With the Soultakers now up on Oceanic realms, they have been confirmed as the source of the hidden Frost appearance.
